Calling all abstracts!

Step onto the global stage and let your science speak for itself by submitting your abstract to UEG Week Virtual 2021. Tens of thousands within our community are eagerly waiting to see what you’ve discovered.

UEG Week Virtual truly is the platform for you to share your science with the worldwide GI community. As the largest scientific medical congress in Europe, submission to UEG Week is a guaranteed way to increase the degree to which your science is seen. The visibility of your abstract will now only be intensified by the fact that the congress is again going virtual for a second, strong year.

The benefits of having your abstract selected include vital recognition, as well as long-term visibility.

Once selected, your abstract and scientific work –

  • Will be given the opportunity to reach a massive international audience.
  • Will be published in the highly renowned, open access UEG Journal.
  • Will take its rightful place in the universal online source for digestive health, the UEG Library.
  • Will provide the opportunity for you to engage in scientific exchange, as well as gain insightful feedback and form useful connections.

UEG also offers awards to high-ranking submissions in the form of both National Scholarship Awards and Best Abstract Prizes 2021. As well as the related accolades, the 36 Best Abstract Prizes awardees and all National Scholarship awardees will receive free UEG Week Virtual 2021 registration.

Not only is abstract submission completely free for all, you need only register for the congress after your abstract is accepted. That means you can already submit your abstract fully free of charge today!

The following are some top tips from Julia Krajewska and Louis Vermeulen, authors of, Young GI angle: how to write a good conference abstract.

  • Abstracts should adequately summarise the essential information of a research project.
  • Writing a good abstract can be your ticket to presenting at UEG Week!

To prevent last‐minute stress, pay close attention to the abstract guidelines for the specific conference you have selected, particularly the word or character count and the format.

UEG updates

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure to address you with our call for applications for the UEG Research Prize and Research Fellowship 2021. Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic with all its implications on finances, science and social aspects, UEG decided to award these prestigious prices to highlight the impact of research in digestive health in Europe even in this crisis.

Every year, UEG awards € 100,000 for excellence in basic science, translational or clinical research in the areas of gastroenterology, hepatology and related disciplines. The Research Prize addresses active, well-established researchers whose science has had or will have crucial impact on digestive health. Please find all details on criteria and the election process as well as your application form online

The UEG Research Prize will be awarded during the UEG Week Virtual 2021 and the winning project will be presented on this occasion. Watch the presentation by Stefan Schreiber who received the distinguished UEG Research Prize last year, for his outstanding project “Therapeutic mechanisms of controlled-ileocolonic-release nicotinamide (CICR-NAM) in IBD”.

Since 2019, UEG also supports a researcher with € 50,000 to spend 12 months working with a renowned European principal investigator. The main purpose of this fellowship is to support the development of a basic or clinical research project and give fellows the chance to improve their scientific skills.

Chloé Melchior, the UEG Research Fellow 2020, is carrying out a research project in the University of Gothenburg, together with her host Magnus Simrén on “A new gas-sensing capsule to understand the mechanisms of fructan-induced symptoms in IBS, and the link to gut microbiota composition and function”.

The application deadline for the Research Prize and the Research Fellowship is April 30, 2021. Please share this opportunity in your societies, and we look forward to receiving your applications!

Furthermore, the UEG Research Committee is committed to inspire and inform researchers in gastroenterology. We invite you to read our briefing on the new opportunities in Horizon Europe, the new European research & innovation framework programme for 2021-2027.

Visit our website at https://ueg.eu/research and stay tuned to the exciting research opportunities in 2021 from webinars on research opportunities to the new opening of the Horizon Europe Support Grant.

Kind regards,

Axel Dignass Luigi Ricciardiello

ECCO'21 Announcement - July 7-10, 2021, Copenhagen, Denmark

Dear ECCO IBD Community,
Dear ECCO Friends,

Let me invite you to the ECCO’21 Congress – which has now been decided to feature an exceptional summertime congress experience in Copenhagen, July 7-10, 2021 in order to minimise any risks related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ESGE Connect 2020

Mark your calendars!

We are pleased to contact you today to inform you of a new digital initiative from the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), ESGE Connect 2020. The event will be 100% online and 100% free taking place on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 08:00 CEST.

To make up for the fact that the annual ESGE endoscopy congress, ESGE Days 2020, could not take place, ESGE has launched a new interactive online meeting to provide a platform where our fellow endoscopists can meet, learn, discuss and debate on the latest updates in the field of endoscopy. The event will be focused on both basic and advanced procedures of GI endoscopy. Attendees will also have access to a series of satellite symposia and the opportunity to explore the virtual exhibition.

We encourage you all to follow ESGE’s social media channels, Facebook (@esge.endoscopy) and Twitter (@ESGE_news) to stay tuned!

And don’t forget to mark your calendars for March 25 – 27 for ESGE Days 2021, where we will all meet again in person. Don’t worry, ESGE is making sure that everyone is safe and sound and look forward to welcoming you in Berlin!

Short Questionnaire: impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on GI practice

Dear colleagues and friends,
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the way we work and has changed life as we know it. We are aware that time is a rare commodity these days but UEG wants to reach out to you and learn about your current circumstances. To help us determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on GI practice and its allied health professions, please fill out this short, 5-10-minute questionnaire on SurveyMonkey.
We invite all GI practitioners and allied health professionals in hospitals or private practices to take part. The data collected via this questionnaire is anonymous. The aim is to publish the results in a peer-reviewed, open-access Gastroenterology journal.
This survey is an initiative of UEG Council, Young Talent Group, National Societies Committee, and Research Committee.
Take care!
Best wishes,

Axel Dignass, President
Henriette Heinrich, Chair Young Talent Group Dan Dumitrascu, Chair National Societies Committee Luigi Ricciardiello, Chair Research Committee
